UGG encourages volunteerism for MLK Day 2022

17 January 2022

Celebrated each year on the third Monday of January, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is an occasion to remember the civil rights leader’s life and legacy, but it is also a call to action for every American to help build a better community – a ‘day on, not a day off’.

This year on January 17, AmeriCorps is once again encouraging citizens to volunteer in their communities, whether it’s cleaning up a public space or assisting those in need, to create strong bonds between people as well as communities, and enable systemic change to happen.

At UGG we put a special emphasis on giving back to the community whenever we can. MLK Day is a great opportunity for us to highlight our commitment to volunteerism and our commitment to people and our planet. We are strong advocates for diversity, equality, and inclusion, our community and our environment and seek to partner with organizations that support the same. So, we invite everyone to join us and ask themselves, in Martin Luther King’s words: “What are you doing for others?”

Based on the success of our Art of Kindness (AOK) events, where our entire organization is invited to volunteer with various non-profit organizations, we are launching a volunteer event focused on the U.S. – ‘MLK Day of Service: A Beloved Community’ – from January 14 to 18. Our staff will be offered volunteering opportunities with organizations that work towards community building and social justice. These include social justice nonprofit, Homeboy Industries, Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes, Love for Our Elders, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, as well as donating blood at local Vitalant bloodbank locations. We also encourage employees from around the world to join the event in a way that is meaningful and makes the most sense to them.

We know that these actions can make a difference in our communities, and we are thrilled that our wider Deckers team is taking part in making the world a better place. Together at our last Art Of Kindness event, we logged over 4,300 hours helping 317 organizations around the world – a 13% increase from last year. We also invited other organizations, including factory workers, vendors and suppliers in APAC, to join us and expand the impact of AOK, which led to over 3,500 additional hours of service.

In honor of this MLK Day, we’re challenging our customers to join us and sign up for a local volunteer opportunity via AmeriCorps.

From providing food assistance to promoting healthy futures, AmeriCorps provides project ideas and tips for everyone to get involved in one way or another. On top of that, at Deckers we’re organizing panel discussions to bring staff together and talk about systemic issues impacting their community and how others can help build a stronger, global community. We hope this inspires you to do great things for your beloved community.
